Greenwich holds layers of English history and one of the tastiest bits imho was Goddards. This traditional pie and mash shop was Mrs. Lovett exotic to me and helped combat the McDonalds and other standard American fast food all over London. So I was gutted when they closed in November 2006 and were replaced by a burger restaurant chain.
While I couldn't work up the nerve to try the eels, once a weekend I would damn the diet and treat myself to a sausage roll. The place was always packed with folks tucking in to plates loaded with pie, mash and liquor, that strange green gravy that I had to google to find out was just made of parsley.
The Goddard's Pie and Mash business was founded in 1890 by Alfred Goddard in Deptford. And now they are on Facebook. More meat pies!
